2007 TRAINING CAMP REPORTS

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

POSTED 6:47 p.m. EDT, August 5, 2007  by Michael David Smith

WR Jeff Webb says of QB Brodie Croyle, "He takes charge of that huddle, no question."

Croyle says of QB Damon Huard, "We're very good friends. [The quarterback controversy] is the last thing on our minds."

LB Donnie Edwards says of being back in Kansas City, "I never wanted to leave. I always enjoyed my time in Kansas City. I thought I'd be there for the duration of my career."

Coach Herm Edwards pulled the plug on the joint practice with the Vikings because "Everybody had short fuses."

DE Turk McBride held his own against Vikings LT Bryant McKinnie.

The more Edwards looks at RB Kolby Smith, the more he likes him.

FB Kris Wilson is catching lots of passes out of the backfield.

LB Derrick Johnson looks good in man-to-man coverage.

Brodie Croyle appears to be leading Damon Huard in the quarterback battle.

As first-round draft pick Dwayne Bowe continues his holdout, the Chiefs are looking for someone to emerge as the No. 2 receiver after Eddie Kennison.

Jason Whitlock describes the Chiefs' receivers after Kennison and TE Tony Gonzalez as "amateur hour."

A large number of starters, including the entire offensive line, was given the day off Thursday.

LB William Kershaw was the MVP of Thursday morning's practice.

Rookie K Justin Medlock has struggled recently.

Coach Herm Edwards says bad snaps have contributed to Medlock's problems.

RB Derrick Ross has a fumbling problem.

Rookie RB Kolby Smith is getting plenty of practice time while Larry Johnson holds out.

Coach Herm Edwards wants the Chiefs to finish the season with 2,000 rushing yards, but he doesn't care whether it comes from one running back or a committee of two, three or four.

Rookie K Justin Medlock hit a 57-yard field goal and missed a 61-yarder by a couple feet.

QB Brodie Croyle showed good arm strength when rolling out and throwing across his body.

Backup S Jon McGraw will make the roster by playing on every special teams unit.

Two defensive starters, DT Alphonso Boone and S Bernard Pollard, missed time with hand injuries.

RB Priest Holmes said he decided to report to training camp after having a dream about it last week.

Jason Whitlock thinks Holmes' dream had dollar signs in it.

With Dante Hall gone, coach Herm Edwards expects an intense competition in camp to see who will win the kickoff return and punt return jobs.

When rookie QB Jeff Terrell (who won the Ivy League MVP award last year) tried to outrun defenders to the sideline on a bootleg, Edwards reminded him, "this ain't Princeton."

OT Kyle Turley has gained 25 pounds to get up to 308. He'll spend time at both left and right tackle.

The team raised money for the tornado-ravaged town of Greensburg, Kansas at Saturday's practice.
