2007 TRAINING CAMP REPORTS

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

POSTED 11:02 a.m. EDT, August 6, 2007  by Michael David Smith

Defensive coordinator Mike Smith says the Jaguars have to improve on last year's league-low four fumble recoveries.

The Jaguars have a special teams only practice Monday morning before getting the full squad back Monday night.

WR Ernest Wilford is learning the job of serving as the team's union representative.

Coach Jack Del Rio doesn't want to release a depth chart to the public, but he'll do it because the league requires it.

Del Rio has two part-time assistant coaches working for him in camp as part of the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.

Del Rio likes what he's seen of the rookie class.

The Jags' official web site suggests that the team could trade backup RB LaBrandon Toefield.

DT Marcus Stroud says the defense has the best depth it's had in his seven seasons in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars' offense got the better of the defense during the intrasquad scrimmage.

Third-string QB Quinn Gray has been taken off the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Fourth-string QB Tim Couch has been working on his throwing mechanics.

DE Paul Spicer has missed time with back spasms.

Assistant head coach Mike Tice says he wishes that when he was a head coach, the NFL was as tough on player discipline as it is now.

With MLB Mike Peterson healthy again, the Jaguars have more speed at linebacker.

DT Marcus Stroud says he's still not 100 percent after off-season microfracture surgery on his ankle.

C Brad Meester had ankle surgery Wednesday and will miss eight to 10 weeks.

WR Matt Jones dropped two passes Wednesday.

The red zone passing game was the focus of Wednesday afternoon's practice.

Tight end is the most hotly contested battle in training camp, with George Wrighster, Marcedes Lewis, Jermaine Wiggins and Greg Estandia all vying for the job.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew says of missing the playoffs last year, "It makes you sick."

S Gerald Sensabaugh is described on the team's official web site as "outstanding in training camp so far," but first-round draft pick Reggie Nelson "looks like a guy who's trying to absorb a lot of information."

The Jags will have an intrasquad scrimmage Friday at 7 p.m.

The Jaguars run the Oklahoma drill at training camp.

New QB Tim Couch struggled to get velocity on his passes.

Rookie Adam Podlesh has the punting job wrapped up

Monday morning's practice was devoted exclusively to the kicking game, so players who aren't on special teams got a rest.

Jaguars long snapper Brett Goode played high school and college football with WR Matt Jones in Arkansas.

CB Scott Starks is wearing a cast on his left wrist.

DE Reggie Hayward says the Jaguars will have no excuses if they get into off-field trouble because the team and the league have warned them about the consequences.

QB Byron Leftwich says of dog fighting, "I'm scared of dogs, personally. I never heard of it."
