GREEN BAY PACKERS

POSTED 11:59 a.m. EDT, August 5, 2007  by Michael David Smith

RB Brandon Jackson is showing off his receiving skills.

Rookie WR David Clowney returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown during the Packers' scrimmage Saturday night.

The Saturday night practice session attracted 59,362 fans.

S Nick Collins intercepted Brett Favre in the end zone during a two-minute drill.

Second-year CBs Will Blackmon and Jarrett Bush stood out Saturday.

In an attempt to simulate the pressure of live game action, the fans were asked to make noise while Ks Dave Rayner and Mason Crosby were kicking.

WR Robert Ferguson, coming off consecutive seasons marred by injury, says, "My foot feels great; I feel comfortable."

The players like the feel of the new turf at Lambeau Field.

RB Vernand Morency could miss a month with a knee strain, but General Manager Ted Thompson says the Packers aren't interested in signing another running back.

Co-defensive line coach Carl Hairston says of DT Justin Harrell, "He's just got to get in better football shape."

K Dave Rayner seems to have the early lead over rookie Mason Crosby.

QB Brett Favre said of the death of his stepfather-in-law, "If I wasn't playing, retired, and was at home, it would be much more difficult."

Favre is looking to get more playing time in the preseason than he has in recent years.

Coach Mike McCarthy excused veterans with more than six years of NFL experience from Thursday morning's practice.

Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette is harsh in his assessment of rookie OL Pat Murray, saying he "looks like he has no business wearing an NFL uniform."

In the wide-open battle for the No. 3 cornerback position, Jarrett Bush was the only player who had a strong showing in Thursday's practice.

With QB Brett Favre out of town, a smaller-than-expected crowd of 3,500 showed up to the Packers' public practice Tuesday night.

Rookie DT Justin Harrell is getting so many repetitions that the coaches are worried he doesn't have enough recovery time.

Rookie RB Brandon Jackson is struggling with blitz pickup.

WR Donald Driver returned to practice after missing time with a shoulder injury.

The coaches have been pleased with the performance of rookie WR James Jones.

Offensive line coach James Campen emphasizes playing until the whistle blows.

The offense couldn't score against the defense in two-minute drills.

There's a seven-man competition for the kickoff returner job.

Brett Favre missed practice Sunday and will miss more practices this week after his wife's stepfather died.

After watching backup QB Aaron Rodgers fill in for Favre, coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers "has progressed a lot since he's been here."

Rookie WR James Jones is turning heads.

Starting RB Vernand Morency stood on the sideline with a bruised knee Sunday.

General Manager Ted Thompson says he likes the group of running backs on the roster, adding, "We're really looking forward to seeing how this group competes."

The Packers will practice at City Stadium, their former home field, for the first time in 50 years on Tuesday.

Backup TE Tory Humphrey is likely out for the season after breaking a bone in his lower left leg during the first training camp practice Saturday.

While the rest of the team practices twice a day, McCarthy is allowing five veterans to practice once a day: LT Chad CLifton, S Marviel Underwood, DE Aaron Kampman, WR Robert Ferguson and TE Bubba Franks.
