2007 TRAINING CAMP REPORTS

OAKLAND RAIDERS

POSTED 1:34 p.m. EDT, August 5, 2007  by Michael David Smith

There's still very little progress to report on the negotiations between the Raiders and QB JaMarcus Russell.

QB Andrew Walter fumbled a snap and made little effort to get the ball back, prompting coach Lane Kiffin to say, "How about picking up the ball when it's on the ground?"

LB Isaiah Kacyvenski is expected to miss at least a month with a knee injury.

DT Warren Sapp thinks highly of C Jeremy Newberry.

QBs Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown and Andrew Walter have combined to throw 14 interceptions in the last four days of practice.

TE Randal Williams has been released

The offensive linemen got so many mixed signals last year that new position coach Tom Cable is telling them, "forget what you know and let's just start over."

Defensive players couldn't tackle the quarterback during Saturday's team scrimmage, but if they could, there would have been several sacks.

Coach Lane Kiffin explains his thoughts on the team he inherited: "This is not an easy job. This team wasn't 8-8; this team was 2-14 and a bad 2-14. So there's a lot of work to do here, and we're doing it one day at a time."

Kiffin says DT Warren Sapp is "giving us exactly what we need."

Rookie TE Zach Miller looks like he'll be an opening day starter.

The Raiders have 14 players who are out or limited by injuries, but most of the injuries aren't serious.

K Sebastian Janikowski hit a 50-yard field goal into the wind.

There are conflicting reports about just how far apart the Raiders and first overall pick JaMarcus Russell are in contract negotiations.

Four different RBs -- Dominic Rhodes, LaMont Jordan, Michael Bush and ReShard Lee -- missed practice Tuesday with injuries.

C Jeremy Newberry threw some uppercuts at DT Anttaj Hawthorne at Tuesday's practice.

QB Daunte Culpepper told coach Lane Kiffin he's confident he'll win the starting job.

When asked if the Raiders would have signed Culpepper if JaMarcus Russell weren't holding out, Kiffin said, "I don't know that."

SS B.J. Ward has three interceptions in the last two days of practice.

The Raiders and the agent for QB JaMarcus Russell did not make much progress in contract negotiations over the weekend.

DE Derrick Burgess is day-to-day as he recovers from hernia surgery.

RB Adimchinobe Echemandu has impressed coach Lane Kiffin by breaking tackles in full-contact drills.

The offense got the better of the defense in blitz protection drills Sunday.

C Jeremy Newberry has gotten more reps than C Jake Grove with the first-team offensive line.

OT Chad Slaughter left Sunday's practice with an ankle injury.
