2007 TRAINING CAMP REPORTS

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

POSTED 12:56 p.m. EDT, August 5, 2007

In the Mike Tomlin era, most of the assistant coaches will be on the sidelines; "You can't cook from the living room," Tomlin says.  (Larry Zierlein is one of the coaches won't be in the press box, but the goal is to keep him away from any computers.)

Dookie will get the start on Sunday night against the Saints.

RB Kevan Barlow is not having a good camp, and could be cut.

Gary Russell and Carey Davis are little-known players who hope to make an impact in the backfield.

Rod Woodson isn't sure that QB Ben Roethlisberger will be able to successfully run a no-huddle offense with 3-4 wide receivers.

Coach Tomlin is running interference for LB Lawrence Timmons, who has missed plenty of offseason and training camp reps with a groin injury.

Rookie LaMarr Woodley will start at LOLB on Sunday night.

WR Willie Reid is the No. 1 returner, for now.

Sean Mahan and Chukky Okobi are still battling for the center job.

As expected, the starters will get short work on Sunday night.

WR Cedrick Wilson has been crying about not getting enough balls.

POSTED 10:42 p.m. EDT, August 1, 2007

RB Willie Parker has "training camp knee."  (Not to be confused with "bus driver butt.")

Given that Parker wants to be "better than L.T.," Willie also might have "prize fighter brain."

LB Lawrence Timmons is still having issues with his groin.

Meanwhile, LB LaMarr Woodley is stealing the spotlight from Timmons.

G Kendall Simmons is fending off all challenges to his starting job.

K Jeff Reed's 42-yard field goal on Tuesday helped the team avoid 30 more minutes of 11-on-11 drills.

Coach Mike Tomlin is giving certain guys a day off here and there.

Rookie P Daniel Sepulveda is still feeling the effects of being asked to punt the ball 72 times on the first day of camp.

CB Ricardo Colclough is getting another shot at muffing kicks.

The best part about training camp is that it keeps Larry Zierlein away from the computer.

NT Casey Hampton might get to play FB in short-yardage sets.

RB Kevan Barlow is trying to adjust to not being the starter.  Or the backup.

The defense beat the offense in a Sunday goal line drill.

WR Santonio Holmes finally practiced on Sunday after missing several days with an undisclosed illness.

S Tyrone Carter and RB Willie Parker got into a minor shoving match after Parker stood Carter up on a blitz attempt.

Parker has a chance to be the third-down back.

WR Willie Reid has been getting banged around, and WR Hines Ward isn't happy about it.

The Steelers cut WR Chris Jackson and re-signed WR Gerran Walker.

LB James Harrison missed Sunday's practice with an abdominal injury.

S Ryan Clark could be on the wrong side of a competition with Anthony Smith.

Max Starks doesn't think he's in a battle for the starting right tackle spot with Willie Colon . . . but he is.

QB Ben Roethlisberger was very sharp in goal line drills during a Friday night practice.

The no-huddle offense is back in the 'Burgh.

Rookie first-round LB Lawrence Timmons has re-injured a groin, which kept him out of most offseason drills.

WR Santonio Holmes is out of action with an undisclosed ailment that he calls "personal."  (He shares an agent with Mike Vick; hopefully, they've never shared a jock strap.)

We're hearing that, when healthy, LB Lawrence Timmons might end up playing on the inside, which will make it harder for him to trigger those contract incentives tied to sacks.

The Steelers are not likely to add QB Aaron Brooks.

WR Hines Ward says that the team's rookie talent is terrible.

Big Ben wants to prove that last season was an aberration.  (Just as soon as he figures out what the word "aberration" means.)

RB Verron Haynes practiced for the first time during camp on Friday night.
